Eating Cream-Filled Obanyaki at Shalm, a Tama Center Station Favorite Since 1981

I visited Shalm (しゃるむ), an obanyaki (a thick Japanese griddle cake with filling) shop about a one-minute walk from Tama Center Station on the Keio Line and Odakyu Line in Tama City, Tokyo. The shop opened in 1981, and I tried the cream, one of its signature flavors.

A Small Shop With a Red Awning Outside Tama Center Station

Shalm is a small shop recognizable by its red awning and the word "大判焼" (obanyaki). It is about a one-minute walk from Tama Center Station on the Keio Line and Odakyu Line.

The shop opened in 1981. At the time, Tama Center was the end of the line, and vacant lots were a common sight in the surrounding area.

It is open 12:00–20:00. There is no regular closing day, but the shop closes on a few days each year. Directions and a map are on the access page of the official website.

Four Signature Flavors, and Phone Orders Let You Skip the Wait

The four signature flavors are ham and cheese, sweet red bean (ogura), chestnut (marron), and cream. The shop also offers seasonal flavors and occasionally introduces new ones.

If you order by phone in advance, you can pick up your obanyaki without waiting through its phone-order service (042-371-7577).

Trying the Cream

This time, I chose the cream. The obanyaki, wrapped in paper, was thick and had a brand stamped into its surface.

When I took a bite, I found an old-fashioned, nostalgic sweetness, and I thought it was delicious.
